Photography provides us the almost alchemical opportunity to shift our perspective: to literally get down at a child’s level and recall the sense of the whole world looming large overhead; or figuratively, by showing us so many more places, people and situations than we could ever have the opportunity to encounter, and in so doing, connect us to them.
In this way a well-made photo can be like a novel, allowing us to slip behind another’s eyes for a moment, just as we temporarily inhabit the mind of a well-crafted character. And a great photo, like a great book, will stay with us, changing us in some way by permanently open our eyes to a new way of seeing the world.
The photographs in this week’s curation all opened my eyes a bit wider. I expect the coming weeks will find me looking up with my camera a lot more often and trying to find vantage points that offer the opportunity to be an omniscient viewer from above. I hope there’s something in the collection that shakes up your perspective a bit. Thanks so much to all of the photographers who submitted.
